NHL 23 Reveal
Electronic Arts
Role: Motion Designer and Senior Editor
Client: Electronic Arts
Production Company: Electronic Arts
This is the first edit I’ve worked on with the NHL team and it was a wild ride. Working with our lead creative Man Hong we did a lot of work up front to sell in the concept of making a live stream with the leadership team.
After some rough shoots and many, many takes we managed to bring together something that felt like a conversation between them all. But at this point, we didn’t have a lot of time left before the reveal went live and still a hell of a lot of work to do. It was either go all-in on this creative concept or default back to a standard sizzle trailer. Non of us wanted to work on a standard trailer if possible, we wanted to do something creatively different to years gone by and something that was going to stand out from this years other sports games trailers.
The only way we were going to get this done was to divide and conquer. I stepped back from the edit once we had a front-to-back built out to a track I found that was the right vibe we were going for. I then passed this over to the very talented Chris Wilton and helped direct him over the final couple of weeks.
Working with Kat Lee on the brand team I designed up the Twitch-style layout as well as built all the social media posts that would pop-up throughout the edit. We had a list of athletes, influencers and streamers we could use but with time against us I had to come up with all the quotes myself. I even snook in my own gamer-tag in there when I needed extra numbers. Once the edit was more locked I then built out the bespoke motion graphics seen throughout.
I want to thank the whole team who worked with us on this. We weren’t sure we were going to get there but thanks to everyone we managed to pull it off. Shoutouts to our capture squad: Chetan Jassal, Trevor Schmidt and Sebastian Jones headed up by Benjamin Amos and Jeff Aho. Producers: Shane O’Farrell and Mark Li. Creative team: Josh Kline and Man Hong. It was great to be a part of your squad and I look forward to working with you all again soon!
