New Work All Play: Live Installation

Back in 2015 Bruntwood (who are the leaders in commercial and retail spaces in Manchester) got in touch with us about Manchester International Festival which was fast approaching. They came to us at the Neighbourhood to come up with an idea to help promote the festival in the weeks running up to launch. The team worked together to come up with a campaign to drive people to the ticket site. The challenge we were tasked with was to make an interactive installation that used footage from previous festivals to help show potential festival goers what they might be missing out on.
The campaign was based on the famous quote from “the Shining”, which was “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. This came from the idea that everyone was too “busy” to attend the festival. So we wanted to encourage the general public to take the time to do a little something for themselves.
Working with the digital team we came up with an idea of creating an interactive website that would generate sharable content which would be displayed on a physical art installation in the heart of Manchester. The team worked on a random word generator provide you with a custom answer after you had filled in the first 2 fields. For example:
ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY.
ALL CRUMPET AND NO MARMALADE MAKES CHEZZA
A POPULAR BREAD QUEEN.
We created a sculpture of a generic face that was about 5 foot high that we would project onto, as well as the surrounding wall. We photographed the entire Bruntwood team and projected their faces onto the sculpture as part of the looping graphics we created. We thought this would really help spread the word of the installation among the team and start driving the foot traffic to its location in Manchester. The campaign proved to be quite successful as a lot of people went to interact with the sculpture and share their custom answers online.
